^ Honestly, and maybe I'm a little biased here because I'm talking about development environments, but I think that almost anyone could benefit from doing some of their work in a development environment.
^ About a year ago at a local WordPress meetup, a retiree showed up with a strong desire to get into WordPress. He had spent his career developing applications in Fortran, and wanted to spend his retirement diving into WordPress by making a site to share his stories.

And, because of his personality, he was insistent on understanding WordPress before throwing any of his fixed income at a hosting account. A couple of us took him on as a project and helped him get a local environment set up on his laptop at the next meeting.
